About the client
The Rolf Lappe - Stiftung is a German non-profit organization that supports children and young people in vulnerable situations by funding social and educational projects. Founded in 1993 in memory of entrepreneur Rolf Lappe, its work focuses on creating better opportunities for development and inclusion, with a long-term approach that supports beneficiaries from early childhood through their formative years.
The challenge
The first version of RechenApp für Kinder, also known as Rakin, included eight basic minigames, primarily focused on counting and number recognition. The main challenge was to expand and deepen the educational experience to cover all levels of the theoretical model proposed by Fritz, Ehlert, and Leutner (2018), while maintaining an attractive and accessible interface for children without compromising the pedagogical rigor required by the scientific team.
The solution
Bengala worked on the adaptation, design, and comprehensive expansion of the game system, developing a total of 37 new minigames organized into three progressive learning worlds:
Level 1: understanding the number sequence, counting, and subtracting quantities.
Level 2: recognizing relationships between numbers, comparing magnitudes, and constructing the number line.
Level 3: understanding numbers as sets, partitioning into subsets, and performing visual addition and subtraction operations.
Each minigame was designed and validated using a scientific checklist (Karahisarlioglu and Fritz, 2024), ensuring that content was presented in a gradual, visually engaging manner aligned with children’s cognitive development.
Additionally, a localization system was integrated to easily translate the game’s texts and audio, facilitating international expansion and adaptation to different languages and educational contexts.
Results
The result is a completely renewed application that preserves the original design and its friendly characters, incorporating a progressive structure with 37 minigames distributed across three worlds of increasing difficulty. The user experience was optimized for desktop, mobile, and tablet devices, ensuring smooth performance, clarity, and a visual aesthetic aligned with the needs of early school-age children.
RechenApp für Kinder effectively integrates scientific research, interactive design, and educational technology, establishing itself as an engaging, rigorous, and scalable tool.
Impact
RechenApp für Kinder has been adopted by schools and families as a support resource for teaching early mathematics. The application demonstrates how collaboration between science and technology can generate a significant impact on children’s learning, improving both motivation and conceptual understanding from an early age.
Thanks to its scalable design and multilingual approach, the project establishes a solid foundation for future versions adapted to new languages and educational curricula.
